AVALON - Integrated Internet Network:
Dave Scott, September 11, 2011

Media: IBM x86-based PC, Synchronet BBS software, Abyss Web Server software.

The Avalon Integrated Internet Network is based upon the film by Mamoru Oshii and is meant to be a virtual world that users can explore and use for communication and file sharing. It consists of four separate but related realms:

The Web Site
Meant to give users a starting point and instructions on how to utilize the rest of the online environment.

The IRC Server - In this realm, users can use Internet Relay Chat to communicate in real time. It's a complete IRC Server and works like any other IRC network.

The Telnet BBS - Meant to be the heart of Avalon. Here, users can set up their user account, use message boards to communicate with other users, and play online games. Also, there are subboards operated by main players within Avalon such as Ash and Stunner. Reading the messages, users can get tips on how to access other parts of Avalon. (Instructions for how to connect to the BBS are on the web site)

The FTP Server - With the FTP Server, Avalon users can exchange photos, videos, and sound files. It is a public FTP Server available to anyone who uses the Telnet BBS to set up a free account. (Instructions for doing this are on the web site)

Offline
Avalon was a temporary experiment set up on a computer in my back room. I'm sorry to say it is no longer online.
